Okay, firstly: no, she doesn't come with a bloody dagger. That's from Buffy's 'Graduation Day' Faith, and Mary ended up with it because, for some reason, her left hand is very clearly sculpted to be holding something. I have no idea what, since she doesn't come with any accessories (besides her base), and so far as I know Mary's not known for using weapons... still, the knife fits into her current nutcase persona in Countdown, so what the heck.
I wasn't sure I'd get her, to be honest, since she's not a character I've ever read much of, and this figure doesn't match her current appearance anyway. Two things changed my mind: one, I found most of Formerly Known As The Justice League in the 50c bins, and two, the costume - the photos showed the white variant (which I always preferred to the red) with flat white paint, but as you can see her costume parts are actually cast in a soft silver-white plastic (the camera flash exaggerates the silver) with a pearly sheen, and it looks terrific. Combined with a great sculpt on the tunic - it's of course just a solid piece, but it really does look like a loose tunic sitting on the body beneath - it gives a silky appearance that really makes her stand out. Just looking at her on the shelf now, I swear it looks 100% like she's a doll with the costume made of real fabric.
On the down side her articulation is the usual DC Direct standard - not much - and on top of that she's constructed in a way that limits a lot of her already-minimal mobility. Her ball joint neck is restricted by her hair, both down her back and across her right shoulder: she can't tilt her head back much, can only tilt forward if she looks to the left, and she can't look right at all - in fact, unless her head's tilted back, she can't even face fully forward. Her arms are fairly articulated, with ball joint shoulders, swivel biceps (at the sleeve edges) and peg elbows, but the sculpted position of her wrists makes her arms look awkward if they're posed other than straight down. She has no waist joint, which is just plain lazy - the position for the joint is practically built into her costume, and it would have added a lot of fine-tuning ability to her pose, so its absence can only be DC Direct being mindlessly stubborn and sticking to their usual no-waist design. Her hips are ball joints, but the skirt restricts them almost entirely to forward-backward, and with no thigh swivel there's no point to being able to widen her stance anyway - her feet wouldn't be flat to the base. Peg knees and swivel boot tops finish her off - all in all, she's stuck in the pose she arrives in, and there's very little room to fine-tune her posture.
Taken all together, she's one for fans - she looks pretty much just as she should, and doesn't have any glaring visual flaws. But if you're not a Mary Marvel fan, there's not a lot else to entice you.
