Spoilers: I'm not going to be deliberately spoiling the endings of stories, but these reviews will contain some details of plots, especially for issues that begin multi-issue story arcs. As a rule of thumb, I won't be revealing anything I personally wouldn't want to know prior to reading an issue.

Annihilation: Conquest - Quasar #2 ~ A slight step down from the first issue, with the panel layouts in this issue being fairly standard fare rather than the adventurous, sci-fi-feel layouts previously seen. The art's still good (and very nipple-y - whatever it is they make space hero uniforms out of on Saturn, it doesn't conceal pokies), so it's not that big a deal. And the writing stepped up a notch, so I guess it evens out - Moondragon got some background filled in, and with her help Phyla grapples with the complications issue #1 introduced into her new Quasar abilities. The relationship between the two women is pleasingly central to the drama - not gratuitously shoved in our faces just because they're lesbians, but an integral part of how both of them are shown to deal with the situation they're in.

Gear Head #4 ~ Tricky to rate, seeing as I picked up issue #1, then saw nothing else from the title until this one showed up. I've asked the shop to try to re-order #2 and #3, but this is from a small publisher so there's no guarantees they'll get anywhere. It's a shame, because it means I really only got the storyline of this issue on the most superficial level - there's some cool smart-ass stuff, a neat trick or two, but whatever depth is there I missed it, such that I'm not even sure if there was depth or not, and unfortunately that just leaves me feeling "Eh, whatever," so far as this miniseries goes. Further assessment will be forthcoming if they ever get the missing issues back in.

I also had a look at Countdown #37 and The Brave and the Bold #6, the former to see if Batwoman was in it (no, but there was a fair bit of Zatanna), the latter because I keep hearing good things about it. But She-Ra season one volume two arrived in stores today, so money was tight - I'll leave Countdown for a less demanding week, and as Brave and the Bold #6 looked to be the conclusion of the arc, I'll wait for it in a trade paperback, and start buying at #7.
